What are the requirements to be employed as a medical assistant?

General:
A medical assistant uses medical and administrative skills to provide support to patients and health care staff under the supervision of a physician or nurse.

The Medical Assistant possesses basic medical knowledge and skills, critical thinking abilities, ability to work with minimal supervision, effective communication and organizational skills, ethics and compassion.

Education and Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Typically preferred:
Graduate of an approved school of Medical Assisting Program.
Successful Completion of Externship
MA Certification

Physical and other Requirements:
Manual dexterity to operate office equipment.
May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.
Good visual acuity through normal or corrected vision.
Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

All candidates for admission to the Northern Career Institute are considered on individual merits, without discrimination on the basis of age, creed, national or ethnic origin, race, color, sex, marital status, handicap, political affiliations or beliefs.

No entrance exam is required.

  2. Education

    a. Candidate must have or be enrolled in a program to obtain a high school diploma, passing G.E.D. scores or Adult Diploma.

  3. Personal Qualifications

    a. References from two employers.

  4. Background & Screening

    a. BCI&I background check that meets compliance regulations with the Criminal Records Check Law in Ohio. Candidates who have not resided in Ohio in the past 5 years are also required to complete an FBI background check.

    b. Negative drug screen on first attempt (Medical Assisting Only)

  5. Tuition

    a. Payment or securing of tuition prior to entry into the program.
