What are the requirements to be employed as a medical billing and coding technician?

General:

The Medical Billing and Coding Technician possesses knowledge of applicable medical coding principles, insurance reporting requirements and general medical terminology to submit medical claims. Attention to detail, critical thinking abilities, ability to work with minimal supervision, effective communication and organizational skills are also required.

Education and Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Typically preferred:
Graduate of an approved Medical Billing and Coding Program.
Successful Completion of Externship
Billing and Coding Certification

Physical and other Requirements:
Manual dexterity to operate office equipment.
Physical demands require standing, walking, sitting, lifting, carrying up to 25 lbs.
Close, distant, and color vision is required.
Requires manual dexterity to grasp and handle records and to operate a computer in the course of work.
The work environment is at a moderate noise level (business office with phones, copiers, computers, and printers).


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

All candidates for admission to the Northern Career Institute are considered on individual merits, without discrimination on the basis of age, creed, national or ethnic origin, race, color, sex, marital status, handicap, political affiliations or beliefs.

No entrance exam is required.

  2. Education

    a. Candidate must have or be enrolled in a program to obtain a high school diploma, passing G.E.D. scores or Adult Diploma.

  3. Personal Qualifications

    a. References from two employers.

  4. Background & Screening

    a. BCI&I background check that meets compliance regulations with the Criminal Records Check Law in Ohio. Candidates who have not resided in Ohio in the past 5 years are also required to complete an FBI background check.

    b. Negative drug screen on first attempt. (Only if required by externship site.)

  5. Tuition

    a. Payment or securing of tuition prior to entry into the program.
